After an unusual day at the 2025 Madrid Open due to the massive blackout that affected the entire Iberian Peninsula and southern France, action returns to the Caja Mágica. Most of Monday’s matches were rescheduled for Tuesday, April 29, including Alexander Zverev’s quest for a quarterfinal spot and Jack Draper’s attempt to reach the round of 16.
Tension is mounting at the Caja Mágica with exciting matchups in a new round of play. Following Novak Djokovic’s elimination at the hands of Matteo Arnaldi, the tournament continues with new contenders looking to capitalize on his absence from the bottom half of the draw.
Due to the massive blackout that hit Spain, the men’s draw will feature overlapping rounds, with some players contesting round of 16 matches while others are still in the third round. There’s no doubt that the courts at the Madrid Open will face a tough and demanding test this Tuesday.

Stefanos Tsitsipas - Lorenzo Musetti: Monte Carlo rematch?

One of the most attractive duels of the day will face Stefanos Tsitsipas and Lorenzo Musetti, in a re-edition of the last Monte Carlo semifinals. The Greek comes after overcoming Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round. This tour on clay is being irregular, considering that it is his favorite surface and where he has had the best results of his career.
On the other hand, Lorenzo Musetti arrives in an excellent moment. The Italian reached his first Masters 1000 final in the Principality, and can say that he had Carlos Alcaraz in trouble in the final, until suffering an injury that would condition him in the third set;
The head-to-head shows a clear dominator, as Tsitsipas leads with 5 wins against only one loss. But, coincidentally, that defeat came in Monte Carlo just a few weeks ago, so the trend could start to reverse.

Grigor Dimitrov - Jacob Fearnley: The surprise from the United Kingdom

Grigor Dimitrov, current number 16 in the ATP ranking, is going through a complicated moment in his career. The Bulgarian's season had its high point in Miami, where he reached the semifinals, and then in Monte Carlo, Grigor reached the round of 16, which would be a good result except for the double 6-0 that de Miñaur gave him to eliminate him from the competition. The Bulgarian had a 2024 marked by physical problems and needs continuity to get back on track.
His opponent will be the British Jacob Fearnley, who comes as a lucky loser from qualifying. In his last match he harvested an important victory against Tomas Machac. At the age of 24, Jacob is going through his best moment, reaching the 68th position in the ranking.
In Barcelona he had already shown that he was playing well, making his way to the round of 16 from the tournament qualifiers.
It will be the first time that both players face each other and for Fearnley it is a good opportunity to win one of the most important matches of his career against a Dimitrov who is not in his best physical or tennis moment;

Cameron Norrie - Gabriel Diallo: British favorite

The former top 10, Cameron Norrie, will face the young Canadian Gabriel Diallo. The Briton, champion in Indian Wells 2021, has been having ups and downs in the last months, but his experience makes him a favorite to reach the round of 16 in a tournament on clay, something to highlight since it is not his best surface. Norrie defeated local Martin Landaluce in his debut at the Caja Magica, followed by a sensational comeback to leave 26th seed Jiri Lehecka on the road.
Diallo is the youngest representative of the Canadian generation looking to follow in the footsteps of Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Coming from the qualifiers, Diallo benefited from the exit of Alcaraz, against whom he was due to make his debut. Instead of the Spaniard, he faced Kamil Majchrzak of Poland, whom he defeated in three tough sets. It will be the first confrontation between both contenders.

Alex de Minaur - Denis Shapovalov: The Aussie, one of the best on tour

Alex de Minaur arrived in Madrid after an exceptional start to the season that has seen him climb up the Top 10 to seventh place. "Demon" reached the semifinals in Monte Carlo and the quarterfinals in Barcelona, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. His game on clay has improved substantially and his consistency on this tour proves it. Slowly, de Miñaur is becoming one of those players who performs well everywhere, although at the moment his sights are set on Roland Garros.
The talented but inconsistent Denis Shapovalov, is looking to regain form in a major tournament. He defeated Japanese veteran Kei Nishikori in a convincing debut, but will face an opponent that will make him hit a lot of balls on Monday.
De Miñaur is up 3-1 on the record, but the last time they met was in 2022.

Jack Draper - Matteo Berrettini: The main event of the day

The showdown between No. 6-ranked Jack Draper against Italy's Matteo Berrettini promises to be the star matchup of the day. Draper has shown that he is continuing his upward trajectory in 2025, winning his first Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, defeating top contender and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. The lefty is very quick on his legs and plays with a lot of top spin, finding advantages playing on slower courts.
On Berrettini's side, the No. 31 is in the process of rediscovering his best form, after some injuries that have slowed him down. In the season he has defeated Zverev and de Miñaur, showing that he is a very dangerous player in any crossroads. In his debut in Madrid he beat American Marcos Giron in three sets, two of which went to tiebreak.
In head-to-head matches, Draper has the advantage: 2 wins in 2 meetings against Berrettini. In the final of the ATP Stuttgart 2024, where the Briton would win his first ATP, and then this year in Doha.

The withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz due to injury, the early defeat of Novak Djokovic and the absence of Jannik Sinner due to suspension have left the Madrid Open draw open for other stars who are taking their first steps. The passage through the round of 16 will help to define a little more who are the strongest candidates to win the title in the Caja Mágica.

Alexander Zverev vs. Francisco Cerúndolo: A chance for revenge after the Argentina Open to reach the quarterfinals

World No. 2 Alexander Zverev and World No. 21 Francisco Cerúndolo meet again in 2025, once more on clay, this time in the round of 16 at the Madrid Open.
Back in February, Cerúndolo defeated Zverev in front of his home crowd in the round of 16 at the Argentina Open, in a tightly contested three-set match. A lot has changed since then, and those days now seem behind Zverev, who bounced back on the Munich clay, where he claimed his third trophy. Sascha is a player who thrives on slow courts and has won multiple titles on them.
Cerúndolo has also had a strong season, reaching the semifinals in Munich before falling to Ben Shelton. He’s been the best-performing South American so far this year, and boasts a solid record against top 10 players.
Surprisingly, the head-to-head favors the Argentine 2–0. In addition to the win in Buenos Aires, Cerúndolo also beat Zverev last year here in Madrid.

Taylor Fritz vs. Casper Ruud: A tough test for Fritz against a clay-court specialist

The final match scheduled for Tuesday night on the Manolo Santana court will be a round of 16 clash between ATP No. 4 Taylor Fritz and Norwegian clay-court specialist Casper Ruud.
This will be a classic clash of styles, with Fritz still chasing his first title on clay. He defeated Christopher O’Connell in his opening match, then advanced after Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi retired before the third set.
Ruud will be the highest-caliber opponent Fritz has faced so far in the Spanish capital. The Norwegian has won 12 career titles—11 of them on clay. After a slow start to the season, he’s gaining momentum on this European swing, and if he hits top form, he’s a serious contender.
Ruud leads their head-to-head 3–1, although Fritz won their most recent meeting at the 2024 US Open.
