Things are getting back on track at the 2025 Madrid Open. After a chaotic day caused by the massive blackout that hit the country, most of Monday’s matches have been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 29 — meaning there’s going to be a lot of tennis to watch. Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and other big stars will take the court to complete the tournament’s round of 16.
The top 16 players in the draw are fighting for a spot in the next round of the season’s first WTA 1000 clay-court event. So far, there have been no major upsets, but that could quickly change. Here's a look at the standout matchups for the upcoming day:

Diana Shnaider faces an Iga Swiatek under pressure

Poland's Iga Swiatek, ranked No. 2 in the world, continues to firmly defend her crown in the Spanish capital after defeating Linda Noskova in the third round. The bad news is that if she fails to repeat the crown she could be displaced from her position, depending on how Coco Gauff fares.
Her opponent will be the promising Russian Diana Shnaider, who at the age of 20 has already won titles on all surfaces. She comes from dispatching Sevastova with a double 6-0, so she arrives very motivated.

Peyton Stearns seeks to stop No. 1

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka continues to show why she is at the top of the ranking. Her 2025 is being very positive, although she lacks titles to consolidate her dominance in the Tour. In her debut she defeated Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-4 and hopes to continue with her overwhelming course in the next round.
She will face Peyton Stearns, who has not had her best start of the season but is looking to change the streak in Madrid, where she defeated her compatriot, Amanda Anisimova in the second round.

Madison Keys, improving steadily on clay

Madison Keys will face Donna Vekic with a chance to keep building momentum in a 2025 season where she remains the only Grand Slam champion so far. She has yet to drop a set, defeating Lucia Bronzetti and Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.
Donna Vekic reaches this round of 16 after beating two of Keys’ fellow Americans — Hailey Baptiste and Emma Navarro. The Croatian is aiming to reach her first quarterfinal of the year.
The head-to-head favors the Australian Open champion 3–1, with their most recent match being a Keys victory in March in the Indian Wells round of 32. This match is second on the day’s schedule on the Arantxa Sánchez Vicario court.

Maria Sakkari takes on a red-hot Svitolina

Arguably one of the most compelling matches of the day will be between Greece’s Maria Sakkari and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. Sakkari is enjoying a resurgence at this year’s Madrid Open, winning all her matches without dropping a set — including a dominant win over Jasmine Paolini in the previous round.
Her opponent is having a dream season in 2025. Svitolina has won 18 matches and lost just 6. She claimed the title in Rouen last week and recently defeated former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina with relative ease in the round of 32.
The two Europeans are tied 2–2 in their head-to-head, though their last encounter dates back to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021.

The day of action at the Caja Mágica will also see Marta Kostyuk take the court, playing for a spot in the quarterfinals against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, whom she leads 2–1 in their head-to-head and enters as the favorite. In addition, Moyuka Uchijima, who recently stunned World No. 3 Jessica Pegula, is gaining more and more confidence on the Tour. The Japanese player will face the dangerous Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Everything is set for tennis to resume in Madrid, and barring any further blackouts, fans can expect a day full of intense emotions.
