With Medvedev's defeat in Montreal,
Rafael Nadal will have a chance to return to number one with a good run.
Nadal skipped over Montreal due to experiencing some minor physical issues that he did not want to risk developing into bigger ones. Yesterday, it was confirmed that Nadal will play in Cincinnati and he'll have a chance to become world number one because of it. Medvedev was the defending champion in Canada and his loss to Kyrgios will lose him quite a bit of points.
That loss makes the difference between Nadal and Medvedev slimmer than ever and if certain conditions are met, the duo will swap positions on the rankings. Nadal needs to win the event to have a chance to become number one while Medvedev would need to lose before the quarterfinals.
If the Russian reaches the quarterfinals he'll hold it for now. The US Open will certainly feature a new number one especially if Medvedev fails to defend his trophy. Nadal is the biggest candidate to overtake him as the Spaniard has no points to defend from last year.
