Mirra Andreeva confirmed that she and Daniil Medvedev will compete together in the mixed doubles event at the US Open, which this year comes with a new format. The news grabbed the attention of the tennis world, as the former World No. 1 ATP player is not known for playing doubles.

The two Russian players have previously competed together in tournaments, such as the Paris Olympic Games, where they lost in the first round to the Italian pair Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani. They had also played at the World Tennis League exhibition event, where they lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa.

Daniil Medvedev is not considered a strong doubles player, as he has never reached an ATP doubles final. On the other hand, Mirra has won the WTA 500 in Brisbane and the Miami Masters 1000 in women's doubles and earned a silver medal in Paris 2024.

The new format for mixed doubles at the US Open this year includes shorter sets, with all matches, except for the final, being played to four games. It will take place the week before the main singles draw starts.

One of the reasons both players are competing in this event is that the tournament's timing will allow them to adapt to the courts and be better prepared for the singles matches, with a prize of one million dollars for the winning pair.

The WTA world No. 6 told Sport Express: “I’d be very happy to play mixed doubles with him, for sure! It’s a lot of fun. It may not have worked out at the Olympics, but hopefully, it will at the US Open. We have already agreed to play there together. We can develop a good tandem.”

By the other hand, the 2021 US Open champion Medvedev praised the teenager: "Mirra is one of the best on tour, I'm lucky to have her as a partner. I hope I won't let her down this time," Medvedev stated.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa have confirmed they will play in the tournament, and Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula, Alex De Miñaur, Katie Boulter, and Aryna Sabalenka are expected to join.
