Sensational Schwartzman comes back from being down 2-1 to beat Thiem, reaches first Roland Garros semifinal

Diego Schwartzman played a sensational match against Dominic Thiem to beat him 3-2 and reach the Roland Garros semifinal for the first time of the year.

Dominic Thiem predicted in his post-match interview after his previous victory a long match with long rallies that will be extremely demanding and that was the exact match we go at the Roland Garros Today. The opening set, which lasted 63 minutes, started off slowly with both players probing the other. Midway through it was Thiem who struck first breaking Schwartzman to take a 4-2 lead but he would not have it for long. Diego played a marvellous game to break him back and tie at 4-4. A couple of games later we arrived in the tiebreak. In it, it was all Schwartzman who simply outplayed Thiem in almost every point winning it 7-1.

Thiem aware of the situation started off furiously in the 2nd breaking Diego immediately to take a 2-0 lead. He held onto it longer than in the first set but once again Diego found a way to break him and tie it at 3-3. The match continued but Thiem played better and batter. That improvement in play culminated with a break of Schwartzman's serve late in the set which allowed the Austrian to capture the set 7-5.

The 3rd set was pure madness as we saw 8 service games where the serving player lost his serve. Those twists and turn are hard to recap but late in the set Schwartzman was leading 5-3 and serving for the set. Thiem played a marvellous game to break Diego and give himself a chance. He would seize that chance several games later in the tiebreak which he won 8-6 after a hard-fought battle. It would be hard to top that set but the next one did his best. Thiem took a 2-0 lead to start it off positioning himself in the driving seat towards a victory.

Over? Not quite. Diego came out inspired with newfound freshness to string together a 4 game run to make it 4-2. He would maintain that lead until it was 5-4 and time to win the set. He played himself into two set points but failed to convey either. Domi smelled blood and he won a point to give himself a breakpoint and then he won another one to break Schwartzmann who failed to win a set for the 2nd time in a row.

Diego had a chance to break Thiem once more in the next game but again the Austrian was better in high-pressure situations. Schwartzman held his serve and we entered the tiebreak. In it, it was Schwartzman who played better winning it 7-5. We entered the final set with both players looking quite tired but as soon as the play started all was forgotten. Midway through the set, Schwartzman started playing better and better and he broke Thiem without dropping a point to take a 5-2 lead. The sensational 5-hour match ended with Schwartzman winning the final set 6-2.
