Stefanos Tsitsipas is set for a significant drop in the ATP Rankings after losing in the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters. The Greek will fall nine spots, from World No. 8 to No. 16, after failing to defend the 800 points he earned by winning the title last year.

Monte-Carlo has been one of Tsitsipas' favourite venues, with three titles in the past four editions and five consecutive quarterfinal appearances. This time, despite a couple of wins, he couldn’t get past Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who came back from a set down to reach the semifinals with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The Greek defeated Jordan Thompson and Nuno Borges and seemed to have a good shot at the title, especially after early exits from contenders like Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Casper Ruud, as well as the absence of Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz.

Tsitsipas now faces his worst ranking in seven years. The last time he was outside the top 15 was back in August 2018. A week later, he entered the top 10 for the first time in his career after a stunning run to the final of the Canadian Open, where he beat four top-10 players: Dominic Thiem (No. 7), Novak Djokovic (No. 9), Alexander Zverev (No. 2), and Kevin Anderson (No. 4). However, he lost in straight sets to World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the final.

Although his performance in Monte-Carlo wasn’t bad, he needed at least a final run to stay inside the top 10—while a semifinal would have kept him within the top 15.

The clay swing has historically been a strong part of the year for Tsitsipas, with five titles on clay courts and eight additional finals. Next week, he defends runner-up points at the ATP 500 Barcelona Open, and he risks another drop in the rankings. An early loss could even push him out of the top 20.
