Taylor Fritz stuns Matteo Berrettini in Indian Wells

A very entertaining match was played between Berrettini and Fritz that saw the American claim a great win to move on at the BNP Paribas Open. Berrettini is a player who enjoys playing attacking tennis and this surface in theory does not work well for him. His serve does not win him a lot of free points and he has to work for points which proves troublesome.

Those issues were even more pronounced against Fritz who is capable of playing some defensive tennis. The American covered the court well and his variety troubled Berrettini greatly who did not have his best today. His forehand was misfiring oftentimes and he only hit 3 aces. That contributed to him losing his serve 3 times in the first set.

Fritz won it 6-4 despite losing his own serve twice and the way he was able to win it was on the 2nd serve of Berrettini. The Italian won only 23 % of his 2nd serve point and that will get you beat against any top 50 player. In the 2nd set, Berrettini stepped up playing better on his first and 2nd serve. Fritz did the same but his level was even great than that of Berrettini.

He was able to win points easier and his serve was working better. Berrettini played two bad games in the 2nd set and in one of those he got broken which gave Fritz enough to close out the match. Matteo had one break point in the 2nd set which was not enough.
