Former world number one Martina Navratilova has expressed
her opinion about the incident involving
Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin. The
tennis world experienced a unique scenario where two players collided on the tennis
court in the
Davis Cup Qualifiers first round between Chile and Belgium.
One of those players was Garin, who collided with Berg during
the Davis Cup tie against Belgium. The knock was a serious one as the
28-year-old received medical attention on the court, but it was not enough as he
was not able to continue the contest and was forced to retire. As a result, Belgium was awarded the point.
The incident drew a serious reaction from some of the big names in tennis, and one of them was former world number one Navratilova, who stated that it should have been Berg who should have been disqualified. “I am
sorry- that should be a default. Out of control. Mind you the screaming is not
great either,” she wrote in a post on the social media platform X—previously known
as Twitter.
Garin, who felt hard done by after the incident, expressed
his opinion on the social media platform, where he criticised the decision. “So
the player is injured and can’t continue to play but we do like nothing
happened,” Garin said in a post on the social media platform Instagram. “Wow
what a beautiful world and what a great mentality.”
Eventually, it was Belgium who clinched the contest as they
defeated Chile with a score of 3-1. Bergs won another single contest as well as
he defeated Tomas Barrios Vera in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3. The
pair of Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen defeated Chile’s pair of
Barrios Vera and Nicolas Jarry with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Chile’s only
triumph came from Garin who got the better of Alexander Blockx in straight sets
with a score of 7-6, 6-1.
