The run of disappointing exits continues for Alexander Zverev, as the World No.2 suffered another frustrating loss at the 2025 Miami Open.
The former Olympic gold medalist faced Frenchman Arthur Fils in the round of 16, cruising through the first set. However, Fils rallied back to level the match at a set apiece, before erasing a 1-3 deficit in the decider to escape with a three-set victory.
After finishing runner-up at the 2025 Australian Open, Zverev suffered quarterfinal losses in Buenos Aires and Rio. The 27-year old fell in his Indian Wells opener, before embarking on a solid run to reach the round of 16 in Miami. However, the German star once again saw his opportunities slip away.
“I have been losing a lot of matches that I feel like I couldn't control lately,” Zverev said after his defeat to the 20-year-old Fils. “It was similar again today. So I have to look at myself more than anything else.
"I think I definitely played better here than I did the last few weeks, but I'm up a break in the third, there is no reason for me to lose this match. I go on to lose four games in a row. In Indian Wells I'm serving for the match, and in Rio I am up 4-1 in the third. In Buenos Aires I was up a set and a break. I'm just losing a lot of matches from a winning position right now. I need to change that."
The 23-time ATP titlist will now turn his attention to the European clay court swing, where he is a two-time champion at the Masters 1000 events in Rome and Madrid. Furthermore, Zverev finished runner up at last year's Roland Garros tournament.
