Former Britain’s number one
Tim Henman has recently spoken
about what made Switzerland’s
Roger Federer a complete player. The 43-year-old is
regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the
singles category.
Former Britain’s number one Henman has recently spoken to
talkSPORT, where he called Federer the ‘most complete player’ he has ever
faced. The 50-year-old was of the opinion that the former world number one’s ability
to play on every surface made him a great player.
“I played Federer the most and I felt that he had the most
complete game,” he said. “For me, he was the most complete player that I ever
played against. He could play on any surface, had very few weaknesses and there
wasn’t a specific area that you could necessarily attack.”
Federer retired from professional tennis in September 2022
after struggling with fitness concerns. He stayed as the number one player in
men’s tennis for 310 weeks, including a run of continues 237 weeks. He was the
first player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open
era to win more than 15 Grand Slam titles. He was also the first player to win
20 or more major titles.
His most successful competition was Wimbledon, where he won the title eight times. His first major title came in London in 2003, where he defeated Australia’s Mark Philippoussis in the final in straight sets
with a score of 7-6, 6-2, 7-6. Federer’s last major title came in 2018 when
he lifted the Australian Open after beating Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the final
in a five-set thriller with a score of 6–2, 6–7(5–7), 6–3, 3–6, 6–1. Other than
that, the Basel-born star also won the ATP Finals on six occasions and also won
a gold medal for his country in the Beijing Olympics in the doubles category.
