Alexander Zverev played a very poor match against an inspired Holger Rune who smashed him easily 6-3 6-2 in Munich.
It's a disappointing result for Zverev who won this event two times in his career but he was thoroughly outplayed by his opponent from start to finish. Zverev did not look too motivated to start the match especially compared to Rune who was very engaged in the match both physically and emotionally. Zverev sprayed errors across the court falling behind 1-4.
Rune played a very bold attacking style not allowing Zverev to assert his somewhat aggressive mentality which he showcased in Monte-Carlo. It worked for a while but then Rune committed a couple of cheap mistakes of his own giving back the lead 4-3. Zverev failed to use that as he got broken once more for the 6-3 1st set finish by the Dane.
Rune continued playing well in the 2nd set against Zverev who still wasn't playing well. He never quite found a rhythm and winners were much less present in his game compared to errors. Zverev was also a bit too loose at times and it was obvious that Rune wanted it more. The Dane took a double break lead in the 2nd set as he cruised to a 6-2 finish.
