Dominic Thiem has played in the Roland Garros final two times but he won't be playing in the final this time as he's out in the first round for the second year in a row.
Thiem lost in the first round of this event last year as well as Hugo Dellien proved better. This time around it was Pedro Cachin, another South American but not from Bolivia, He's from Argentine and he was able to survive a pretty good comeback attempt by the Australia which almost worked.
The match didn't start that well for Thiem as the in-form Cachin took the first two sets pretty easily 6-3 6-2. The 3rd set was a proper roller coaster as initially, it saw Thiem get up early 4-1 but then he gave the lead back. Cachin broke to make it 6-5 with a chance to close out the match but Thiem forced a tiebreak which he then won.
The 4th set was another good one from Thiem as he cruised in that one but he couldn't keep that momentum going in the final set. Cachin took an early break and he was able to hold it and win the match in five sets. A valiant attempt by Thiem but it's clear that he's still not back to his best. It seems unlikely that he will ever return to that level.
It wasn't a particularly great match by either player as they combined for 143 unforced errors with 84 belonging to Thiem alone.
