Corentin Moutet is back in the news for the wrong reasons again as he retired abruptly at the
Madrid Open on Wednesday afternoon when he retired after receiving a point penalty.
Moutet destroyed his racquet after losing a point in the second set. He was handed a code violation losing a point. He refused to play on walking to the net and shaking hands with both the umpire and his opponent.
The Frenchman told fans to 'leave the stadium' during the set trading barbs with the fans. Boos and whistles rang out on Court Six where he was facing Harold Mayot and he advanced with a 6-3, 4-2 win.
He took issue with the spectators and starting ranting towards umpire Mohamed Lahyani. “I’m doing my job, I’m playing man, I’m not doing anything wrong,” he said.
He then appeared to walk into the crowd disappearing behind the stands. At the changeover he continued his argument and shouting at members of the crowd. While Lahyani tried to diffuse the argument, he threw his racquet into the back of the court. Spectators started jeering and Moutet responded by bending his racquet in half.
He offered it to the fan and after receiving a point violation shook hands with the umpire calling it quits. He walked to the other side of the net for a handshake with Mayot and packed his bags throwing his racquet in the bin in bizarre scenes.
The fans on court started booing him as he left as it was yet another weird scene for the Frenchman.
