The Wimbledon title is back up for grabs starting Monday, July 1st, as the top ATP players are gearing up for a good run at SW19 while defending the points they earned in 2023. The main targets are the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and the runner-up Novak Djokovic, who risk a significant drop in their ranking points.
The defending champion defends 2,000 points and will drop considerably in the rankings if he does not defend his title, falling at least to world No. 4 (or even lower, depending on what his rivals achieve).
Alcaraz is not the only one with significant points to defend, as world No. 1 Jannik Sinner was a semifinalist in 2023, which equals 720 points that will expire once the tournament ends. However, the top ranking is not at risk for Sinner, as he only needs to step on the court in the first round to secure the No. 1 spot at the end of Wimbledon.
The current world No. 5, Daniil Medvedev, also reached the semifinals in 2023, achieving his best campaign at the All England Club last year. However, he was defeated in the semifinals by the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, losing 3-6, 3-6, 3-6.
The four semifinalists from 2023 have maintained good results over the past year to varying degrees, and even an early elimination at Wimbledon will keep them in the top-5 once the grass swing is over. However, some contenders who reached the quarterfinals last year risk more if they cannot match their 2023 results, which earned them 360 points.
This is the case for Holger Rune, who entered the tournament as world No. 15 and risks dropping several positions if he does not achieve a good result. In 2023, he entered as the 6th seed and had his best run at a Grand Slam so far, but lost to Alcaraz in the quarterfinals in straight sets. The 7th seed Andrey Rublev couldn't get past Djokovic and also faces a tough challenge in defending his quarterfinals spot.
The player most dependent on his points from Wimbledon is Christopher Eubanks, who has 835 points currently and is defending 360 this week. The American world No. 62 is in a delicate position as a first-round loss will cause him to drop more than 50 positions, while he must at least reach the fourth round to stay in the top-100.
World No. 44 Roman Safiulin is the last player who reached the quarterfinals last year, his best performance in a major so far. Safiulin will fall out of the top-80 if he does not surpass the debut, and any result less than the quarterfinals will drop him out of the top-50 for the first time in nearly a year.
