Although Holger Rune failed to bring home the trophy at last week's Indian Wells tournament, the Danish star received tremendous support from his fans, with perhaps his biggest fan, mother Aneke Rune, sending some comforting words to her son.
The former World No.4 displayed some of his best tennis in recent years during Indian Wells, upsetting Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev en route to the final. However, he was outplayed by British star Jack Draper, who recorded a clinical 6-2 6-2 victory to win his first ATP Masters title.
The 21-year old was competing in his fourth ATP Masters final, and his 10th final overall at the ATP level. Rune had not made a final since January 2024, and the significance of his loss hit him hard after the match, as he was seen fighting back tears during the trophy presentation.
"On the right track," wrote Draper on social media a few hours later. "After 7 semifinals last year it’s this step further I needed now to get the big wins again. I know what I didn’t do right today and I know what to do next time and most importantly, I am really hungry to improve!
"Thank you team for the high level work behind the scenes and thank you family for your honesty and unconditional love."
Aneke Rune, who frequently accompanies Holger to his tournaments, was absent at Indian Wells. However, she chimed in on her son's assessment, adding some comforting words to his social media post.
"You are most definitely on the right track," wrote Aneke Rune.
Not the final I dreamt about . But happy to be on the right track . Draper was on it this week and deserved the title here. I went one step closer after 7 semifinals the past year , nice to be in a final again, but now I am hungry for the real 🥇trophies. One more step next time… pic.twitter.com/00Xm5AJRsy
