Alexander Zverev defeated Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets during the third round-robin match at the ATP Finals, securing his spot in the semifinals as the group leader and eliminating the Spanish 4-time Grand Slam champion. The German took the lead in their head-to-head, now 6-5 in his favour, after a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory.
After the match, the two showcased their camaraderie off the court with a friendly exchange at the net. "That's all?" Alcaraz joked with Zverev about his high level of play. "I f***ing love you man, you know that?" responded ‘Sascha’.
"You won too much this year, you won too much against me this year!" Alcaraz exclaimed, referencing his opponent's successes. "I didn’t last year!" the 21-year-old Spaniard replied.
Alcaraz has been eliminated from the tournament and now travels to Málaga to prepare for his final event of the year at the Davis Cup. The world No. 3 joins Rafael Nadal, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pedro Martínez, and Marcel Granollers in the Spanish squad.
On the other hand, Zverev reflected on the importance of avenging his previous loss to Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final. "He beat me too many times this year in important matches so I’m happy that I got this one," the two-time former champion said.
"But you know, obviously I feel like we have a pretty good rivalry with a great friendship as well so it’s always nice to play against him except when he beats me, that’s not nice. But just sharing the court with him, he’s a great guy and I’m looking forward to the next matches with him as well," he added.
Zverev now prepares for a semifinal clash against world No. 5 Taylor Fritz, who advanced as the second player from the Ilie Năstase Group. ‘Sascha’ has been flawless so far and is the favourite to move on in pursuit of his third ATP Finals title (2018, 2021).
