Alexander Zverev cruised past World No. 92 Jacob Fearnley to reach the second week of the Australian Open without dropping a set. The World No. 2 delivered a dominant performance, securing a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory and advancing to the Round of 16.

Dominant Zverev reaches week two in Melbourne

Both players started strongly on serve, but Zverev’s precision gave him the edge as he comfortably held his service games. The pivotal moment of the first set came in the sixth game, where the German secured a break to go 6-3 up, conceding only four points on serve in the set.

The second set began with difficulties for the German, who faced his first break points but masterfully managed to hold serve. Midway through the set, Zverev secured a break, though Fearnley quickly broke back. However, the German capitalised on key moments, showcasing his extensive experience on the tour, and earned a decisive break to close the set 6-4.

With the momentum firmly in Sascha’s favour, Fearnley seemed unable to truly challenge Zverev and consistently found himself trailing. The Brit’s effectiveness on both his first and second serves dropped significantly, and his backhand became the weakness Zverev exploited in longer rallies.

There was still room for drama, as both players traded breaks in the third and fourth games. With the score at 2-2, Sascha earned another break, taking complete control of the match’s rhythm and ultimately sealing a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Zverev averaged a first serve speed of 200 km/h (124 mph) and secured the straight-sets win to advance to the Australian Open Round of 16. The two-time Grand Slam finalist will face the winner of the all-French clash between Ugo Humbert (14th seed) and Arthur Fils (20th seed).
