Jannik Sinner for the first time since October lost a set as an incredible streak ended at the Australian Open but he still prevailed against the Aussie ace Tristan Schoolkate 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round to quell the potential upset charge.
Sinner rallied for the victory against the World No.173 who delivered a superb opening set salvo to raise the potential of a huge upset. But he was unable to maintain it and in the end Sinner ran away with it fairly comfortably as the Italian will hope that this is his one and only scare of the tournament.
From that opening set, Sinner won 16 of the final 21 games from 2-3 in the second set for his 16th consecutive win on tour. He did not earn a break point until the seventh game of the second set but then broke his opponent five times en route to victory in superb fashion.
He showed once more against a home hope that he can deliver the goods with his record now standing at 14-0 against home players whether in Australia or further afield.
He now moves on to face Marcos Giron who he won against in you guessed it straight sets as part of that run that has just ended in Shanghai in October. Sinner is on the charge and while Australian fans would've dared to dream about a potential upset, he decidingly discerned those hopes.
Finally on court today into the early hours will be Daniil Medvedev. He takes on rising American, Learner Tien who impressed at the Next Gen Finals and after the former struggled in his opening game, he will hope for a similar on the plate opportunity. But will he be handed it or is that a mere momentary blip on Medvedev's run?
