Alex de Minaur is the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) Grand Final champion taking over from Jack Draper winning the title in London as Holger Rune suffers back-to-back final losses.
De Minaur has gone undefeated throughout the whole tournament and shut out Holger Rune in the grand final who had previously defeated Ugo Humbert and had played two matches in a row.
But the Aussie ace was the standout all tournament. He wore down Gael Monfils in the previous tie with the 38-year-old unable to muster anything else as the Aussie won down the stretch.
It was a pretty simple win for De Minaur in the final who showed a statement of intent early on as Rune lost out 13-8 in the opening quarter and he exerted his dominance from there on.
He won the second 14-11 and the third 16-10 by an even larger margin to claim the win 3-0. He previously topped his group with three wins alongside Rune so defeated him twice in the tournament. Rune reached the final last year and lost out to Jack Draper so it is a double dose of defeat for the Dane.
But De Minaur who will now head home to Australia ahead of the close season and the Aussie summer where he will be a leading light has shown that he means business going into that. London of course with his girlfriend Katie Boulter being from the UK means a lot so it is certainly more than the cash prize and plaudits for the Aussie in the Patrick Mouratoglou led tournament.
As is the case during the truncated part of the season in which players holiday, the other option is exhibitions and De Minaur becomes the latest winner. With Charlotte these past few days seeing Tiafoe and Keys prevail, Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Navarro also won in the Garden Cup.
Very much a great way to keep the arm in, the UTS also provides a different format and a bit of fun especially for those players who are known as showmen such as Monfils, Bublik and even De Minaur with the extra spice of quarters and bonus cards.
