Carlos Alcaraz has already made his name as one of the
stars of modern tennis. Can he sustain this success and win another Wimbledon
title? In this article, we’ll explore the challenges facing Alcaraz and also
look at his strengths as he looks to win Wimbledon 2025.
Challenges
Before we take a look at all the reasons why Alcaraz
is poised to dominate at Wimbledon in 2025, let’s discuss some of the
challenges facing him.
The Spaniard has had a hard few years in terms of
injuries. He was in top form in 2021 at the US Open at just 18 years old. As of
2025 he has achieved titles at four
Grand Slams. Since then, he has had
some unfortunate injuries and physical maladies that have whittled away at his
form. He was unable to compete at the Australian Open due to a hamstring injury
in 2023. That same year, he also experienced a forearm injury as well as
full-body cramps that saw him drop the final two sets in the French Open
semi-finals.
Another potential issue for Alcaraz’s 2025 Wimbledon
hopes is the competition. More specifically, he will be up against players who
have enjoyed sustained success, whereas he is still relatively new to the
sport. It remains to be seen whether this talented player can prove himself to
be reliable over a long period of time. Björn Borg, Boris Becker and Mats
Wilander are three examples of players who won multiple Grand Slams before they
turned 21, but were ultimately unable to sustain that energy for the long term.
While there is no doubting his ability on the court,
Alcaraz is plagued by some bad habits that could hinder him. While some of
them, such as his penchant for unnecessary risks, make him a fan favourite,
almost all of them cost him points. His lacklustre serve and reliance on
backhand slices are two other examples. With that said, we would put this down
to inexperience. If he continues in the sport for years to come, then he will
no doubt overcome these issues as he grows as a player. For that reason, while
we’re including this in the ‘challenges’ section of our article, consider this
more of an opportunity for growth than a clear and persistent detriment to his
future success.
Strengths
Now that we’ve spent some time examining the potential
challenges standing in his way, let’s look at why Alcaraz is poised for another
incredible performance at Wimbledon 2025.
First and foremost, he has the talent to take him all
the way. The 21-year-old has already won four Grand Slams, and this is not
something that most people can say! He has achieved 65 wins in his first 75
Grand Slam matches, a record that is only surpassed by John McEnroe. It should
therefore be self-evident that he is exceptionally skilled at the game.
Another area where Alcaraz thrives is his drive and
passion. There have been a few moments on the court that have shown us his love
for the sport. His reaction at the 2024 Olympics, both when he missed the gold
and won the silver, demonstrated the sheer drive and determination that he has
to compete against the best and stake his claim as a legend in the sport. He
seems well-positioned to do just that, and his silver win made him the youngest
player since tennis superstar Novak Djokovic (who
won the gold in 2024) to win a medal.
Confidence is yet another reason why we think Alcaraz
has what it takes to attack the court this season and perform well at Wimbledon
once more. Talent and drive are crucially important, but confidence can make or
break a player, especially in the face of injuries. Alcaraz has made it
abundantly clear in his interviews that he fully expects to be at the top of
the sport and is willing to put in the work to do so. This confidence makes him
rather fearless on the court and has been a big contributor to his success so
far.
