Angelique Kerber has revealed that her comeback is on the right track as she continues preparation for the 2024
Australian Open and
United Cup.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Kerber has been absent from the
WTA Tour for over a year. In August 2022, the German player announced that she was expecting her first child before giving birth to her daughter Liana in February.
Recently, the 35-year-old has been preparing to return to the sport, with her main aim being the Australian Open in January 2024. However, she made sure to give herself an opportunity to readjust beforehand by scheduling her place at the United Cup, which will act as a warm-up event for the Melbourne Slam.
Kerber reveals plans are going well
Kerber recently attended the German Sports Press Ball in Frankfurt, where she provided an update on her comeback plans.
"I still have a few weeks until I go to Australia. Now training is particularly about playing for points, in order to get match practice," she said, "Of course it’s a cold start for me. I've never taken such a long break. I accept the challenge and am looking forward to it."
The former World No. 1 also shared her delight at the thought of being back on the court.
"I love the sport and I missed it a lot. It will be a very exciting year," she continued.
Finally, Kerber wished her compatriots good luck for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals this week.
"I keep my fingers crossed for them, wish them all the best and a sensation," she said.
