Former Spanish player
Feliciano Lopez will continue as the
director of the
Davis Cup till 2027. The International Tennis Federation
announced the development as was reported by
ESPN.
The premier team competition has been played since the start
of the 20th century and now, as many as 155 teams participate in the
event. Italy are the reigning champions and now, they have lifted the
competition on two consecutive occasions. This year, the final eight will begin
from November 18 to 23 in Italy where the hosts will be joined by seven other
teams fighting for the ultimate prize.
Lopez, who has a fabulous record while playing in the competition
as a player, having lifted four titles with Spain, was also quoted in a report
where he stated that he was ‘honoured’ after being selected for the role after
the next two years.
"I'm honored that the ITF has put its trust in me for
the event's long-term future and I'm excited to work on it in Italy for the
next three years, starting in Bologna this November," former world No. 12
Lopez said in a statement. I'm sure that we will build on our success in
Malaga, and I will give everything to continue the growth of the Davis
Cup."
Last year, Italy defeated Australia to retain their title
for the first time in their history. The score was 2-0. First, it was Italy’s Matteo
Berrettini who defeated Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets
with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Later, in the second match, it was the reigning world
number one Jannik Sinner who came out on top in straight sets against Tallon
Griekspoor with a score of 7-6, 6-2.
