Iga Swiatek has said that it is too soon to be naming her,
Aryna Sabalenka, and
Elena Rybakina the Big Three of women's singles.
World No. 1 Swiatek has become a force to be reckoned with over recent years. The 22-year-old has four Grand Slam victories to her name along with 14
WTA Tour-Level titles.
Meanwhile, world No. 2 and No. 3 Sabalenka and Rybakina have also experienced a lot of success in their careers so far.
Sabalenka is known for her powerful style of play, which saw her win her first Grand Slam in singles at the 2023 Australian Open. The 25-year-old Belarussian has also made it to the semi-finals of each of the three other majors, and she recently got very close to usurping Swiatek's No. 1 status at Wimbledon but stayed in second after she lost her semi-final match against Ons Jabeur.
Moreover, 2022 SW19 champion Rybakina, 24, has five WTA singles titles and has finished runner-up in nine others.
No Big 3
In light of these simultaneous achievements, there have been whisperings of a new potential Big 3 in women's singles tennis. The name is inspired by the tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, who dominated men's singles for decades.
However, Swiatek has spoken out against the name, emphasizing that she feels it's simply too soon for herself and her fellow players to receive such high praise.
Speaking about the name, the Polish player said that it was being used by the media to gain more attention, and that it didn't reflect the same level of achievement as the the original Big 3 had obtained,
"The media also function to attract viewers & creating a female Big 3 will definitely help.. The naming is too quick, bc in men’s tennis Djokovic, Federer & Nadal achieved much more than us."
