The Rome Open is gearing up for significant changes ahead of its 82nd edition in 2025, set to take place from April 19 to May 18. One of the biggest storylines will be the return of Jannik Sinner after a three-month suspension, making his comeback at his home Masters event.

A year ago, tournament officials announced that by 2026, the Foro Italico’s main stadium would be equipped with a retractable roof to prevent rain delays. This decision comes after the 2023 edition saw numerous first-round matches suspended due to rain, creating scheduling complications. Matches were repeatedly interrupted, including a 40-minute delay during the final between Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune.

For this year, the tournament organizers, in collaboration with the Italian government, have introduced major upgrades. The event will now feature an adapted stadium with a 3,000-seat capacity—the “Stadio dei Marmi”, named after Italian sports legend Pietro Mennea. For the first time, this venue will host official tennis matches, including some exhibition events leading up to the Masters tournament.

A press conference was held this afternoon with the presence of Angelo Binaghi (President of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation), Marco Mezzaroma (President of Sport and Health), Andrea Abodi (Minister of Sport and Youth), and Francesco Rocca (President of the Lazio Region).

“The results we are presenting today are the fruit of work, sharing, and collaboration. The Foro Italico today is a place for everyone. It is no longer just a place for sport but also for entertainment and a destination,” said Andrea Abodi, Minister for Sport and Youth. “To achieve constant improvement, you need to follow a compass. We often take international realities as examples, but fortunately, we also have examples of excellence in Italy, such as FITP and Sport e Salute.”

The Rome Open complex has expanded from 12 to 20 hectares, now featuring nine match courts and 12 training courts, solidifying its status as a top-tier professional venue. The Foro Italico has already hosted the Davis Cup, Billie Jean King Cup, and various exhibition events, further proving its growing importance in the tennis world.

According to José Morón from Punto de Break, the tournament has also announced the addition of two new courts to meet ATP and WTA standards for mixed events, ensuring a seamless experience for players and fans alike.
