"It's never easy to step away": Pliskova shuts down rest of 2023 season due to injury

Karolina Pliskova has announced that she is ending her 2023 season early due to a left-wrist injury.
The former World No. 1 last competed at the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open last month where she was eliminated in the second round by Hailey Baptiste, who won the match 7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(4). This was another disappointing result in what has been a difficult season for Pliskova.
Although the Czech player made it to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open back in January, she has not won more than one match at a tournament since April. She was defeated in the first round of the French Open and Wimbledon and did not make it past the second round at the US Open.
Pliskova sad to end season but wants to come back stronger
The 31-year-old announced the news in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter. She started by expressing her regret at having to step away from the season early.
"Hey everyone! I wanted to share some news with you all. Due to an injury to my left wrist, I've made the tough decision to end my season earlier than planned. It's never easy to step away from the game..." she wrote, before adding that she was aiming to come back stronger in 2024.
"...but I believe it's the right decision to focus on my health and come back stronger next season. Thank you for all your support and well wishes. I'll be working hard to get back in top form, and I can't wait to see you all on the court next year!" she continued, accompanying the statement with a tennis ball and a love-heart emoji.
Fans reacted to the statement by showing their support for the World No. 36.
"First and foremost, your health comes above all. Taking a step back now is just a leap forward for your future on the court. With your dedication and spirit, I'm confident you'll bounce back even stronger next season. We're all cheering for your recovery and eagerly awaiting your powerful comeback. Take care and heal up!" wrote one.
"Wishing you a gentle recovery. Looking forward to seeing you back on the court in 2024," added another.
"There is no point in playing through a wrist injury and then make it become a career ending surgery [because] of pushing it inadvertently. Wishing your wrist to heal as fast and possible and a great 2024 upcoming season," another commented.
