Miami Open announces wildcards for men's and women's draws, with 2023 champion Petra Kvitova leading the way. The tournament also invites local players Learner Tien, Sloane Stephens and Christopher Eubanks.
The tournament will be the second stop of the Sunshine double - after Indian Wells - and will be played from 17-30 March. The WTA defending champion is Iga Swiatek, who defeated Maria Sakkari in the 2024 final. The ATP defending champion is Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Daniil Medvedev in the final.
The former world No. 2 returns to the Miami Open for the first time since claiming the 2023 title, defeating Elena Rybakina in the final. It marked her 9th WTA 1000 title and her first since 2018. Kvitova played her first match after maternity leave at the recent ATX Open, where she was defeated by Jodie Burrage (6-3, 4-6, 4-6).
Despite the loss, the 34-year-old Czech showed good form after 17 months away from competition. She will return to Indian Wells this week, where she will debut against Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva. Miami could be the perfect place for Kvitova to gain more rhythm and climb the rankings, as she is currently ranked No. 1448 in the world.
One of the rising stars of the ATP Tour this season, the 19-year-old American reached the final of the Next Gen ATP Finals late last year and has made a significant leap in 2025, becoming a serious threat on tour. Tien has already claimed two victories over top-5 players: Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open and Alexander Zverev at the Mexican Open.
Currently ranked No. 68, he did not make the cut for the entry list but was given a wildcard by the organization. This will be a great opportunity to earn points and continue his climb up the ATP rankings, currently standing at a notable 31st in the ATP Race.
After a streak of 10 consecutive losses, Sloane Stephens' fall in the rankings has left her out of the top-100, currently ranked No. 115. The former US Open champion has dropped steadily from the top-30. She defends her second-round finish in 2024, where she defeated 3-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber in straight sets.
Back in 2018, just months after her first major title at the US Open, Stephens claimed her only WTA 1000 title in Miami, defeating players like Kerber and Victoria Azarenka before overcoming Jelena Ostapenko in the final.
A couple of seasons ago, Eubanks made a remarkable jump from outside the top-100 to world No. 29, his best-ever ranking, after winning the ATP 250 Mallorca Open and reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. However, he has struggled to maintain his place among the Tour's elite, with a gradual drop in the rankings, currently standing at No. 104.
The 28-year-old American had his best performance in a Masters 1000 at the 2023 Miami Open, where he reached the quarterfinals, defeating opponents such as Borna Coric and Adrian Mannarino before falling to the 4th seed and eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.
