We already announced it a few days ago and now the Australian Open itself has announced it: Stan Wawrinka will participate in the Melbourne 2025 tournament after his wildcard was confirmed.
The 39-year-old Swiss, winner of the tournament in 2014 in a final in which he edged out Rafa Nadal, will be joined by the following players in the men's draw who have also received invitations to be in the final draw that starts next January 12:
Tristan Schoolkate (WA), Li Tu (SA), James McCabe (NSW), Daria Saville (Vic), Ajla Tomljanovic, Emerson Jones (Qld), Talia Gibson (WA) and Maya Joint (Qld).
"I am incredibly grateful to receive a wildcard for the 2025 Australian Open," Stan Wawrinka told the Australian Open website. "Melbourne holds a very special place in my heart - it's where I won my first Grand Slam and it's one of the biggest milestones of my career. The city, the people, the loud fans and the electric atmosphere make the Australian Open so special for me and I can't wait to get back on court in Melbourne."
In the women's draw, Australia's Saville is also relishing the opportunity to be at her home Grand Slam. The Aussie player, who reached the fourth round of the tournament in 2016 and 2016, returned a few months ago to the WTA top 100 after a difficult period.
"I am delighted to have another opportunity to compete in the main draw of the Australian Open," said Daria Saville. "I would like to thank Tennis Australia for their continued support and for allowing me to compete in my home Slam. I am very motivated and working hard to get back into the Top 100 and reach a career-high ranking of 20. The Australian summer is my favorite time of year playing at home and I hope it sets the tone for a strong 2025 season."
