While there were jubilant scenes on the streets of Madrid as the power outage ended after 10 hours yesterday, the Madrid Open have only just got their power back now with the potential for play to start on time thrown into initial jeopardy.
At around 9am local time, they confirmed that they still were without power and the gate time had been delayed until 11:00am with the tournament already deciding not to start until at least 12pm today anyway due to the issues yesterday.
They have a lot of games to cram in but like cancelling play yesterday early, it was very much seemingly a foresight move.
“Due to reasons beyond the organization’s control, the Caja Mágica is still without power supply as of this morning. As a result, the opening of the gates has been delayed, and we expect to open them at 11 a.m.,” they said.
But just as it seemed like the issues would continue, the power supply was restored soon after. "Power supply has been restored at the Caja Mágica. To ensure the proper functioning of the entire facility, gates will open at 11:00 AM, and play will begin at 12:00 PM, as originally scheduled," they wrote.
This situation has seen a lot of players including Coco Gauff detailing their experience. She was one of only three singles players alongside Mirra Andreeva and Matteo Arnaldi to complete their tie yesterday before the power suddenly cut out.
Jacob Fearnley v Grigor Dimitrov was one where the latter was on the verge of victory but the Skycam stopped above the court and couldn't be powered. Estoril Open which is a Challenger tournament this year decided to play on but behind closed doors to stop any disruptions as to this situation with Spain, Portugal and France all affected. Now the staff at the Caja Magica will hope for no more disruptions.
