Zheng Qinwen had in particular an incredible end to the season narrowly losing to Coco Gauff in the final of the 2024 WTA Finals and her serve in particular is a weapon to be marvelled at as shown by end of year statistics.
The Chinese ace leads the WTA Tour by some distance with 445 overall during the year in comparison to 358 from Elena Rybakina who in reality is also an interesting second place given that she didn't play for certain parts of the season.
But it shows that when she is fit and firing that her serve as a weapon is also something that is underrated and not heralded. Aryna Sabalenka's power game will lead to aces and she sits third with 307 followed by two more interesting picks as Ekaterina Alexandrova is fourth with 284.
Paula Badosa completes the list with 265 in fifth place. It also sees a changing in the guard of sorts with Caroline Garcia previously leading the list for two years. She was the ace queen with a stark comparison showing her drop off in form. She sits eight with 248 aces hit albeit this was in just 33 matches played as she sat out the majority of the end of the season.
Also for Zheng Qinwen, it is very much boom or bust when it comes to her serve. As per further statistics, she leads the tour with first serve points won at 75%. But is second last at first serves in at only 52% so it is basically ace or unreturned or it is not effective. Her second serve win rate is also puzzling at 47%.
A marvellous talent and one that takes opponents off their feet but is very much looking to add different facets to the serve to not make it as much of a boom or bust weapon in 2025.
