Two Australian players are set to secure a significant hike in
the
WTA rankings.
Ajla Tomljanovic and
Daria Saville recently had impressive
outings in the recent past. Tomljanovic recently featured in the ATX Austin Open, where his journey ended in the semifinals.
She lost to the 2024 US Open runner-up Jessica Pegula with a
score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. That impressive performance will see her jump 17 ranks, and she will now feature in the top 100 players in the WTA rankings. She will
be world number 94 when the new rankings will be announced on Monday.
Tomljanovic defeated America’s Kattie Volynets in the first
round in straight sets with a score of
7-6, 7-5. In the second round, she got the better of Jodie Burrage with a score
of 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, the Zegreb-born star defeated Ena
Shibahara of Japan with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 7-6.
Another player who is set to improve her standings in the
WTA rankings will be Saville. The 30-year-old recently featured in the Merida
Open, where her journey ended in the semifinal after losing to Emiliana Arango with
a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. That performance will see her gain 12 spots in the WTA
rankings, and she will be ranked 109th. That performance was
impressive on so many level,s as it was the first time this season she managed
to cement her spot in the quarterfinal or beyond.
Saville had an impressive run in the competition, where she
defeated tournament favourite Spain’s Paula Badosa in the quarterfinal. The Spaniard
was forced to retire because of a fitness concern. The final score of the match
was 1-6, 5-3. In the first set, the Moscow-born defeated sixth-seed Ukraine’s Marta
Kostyuk in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6. In the second round, she got
the better of Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
