In a week that has seen Aryna Sabalenka consistently have to wait to even play at the Berlin Ladies Open due to rain, she has been forced to retire mid-way through her Quarter-Final tie against Anna Kalinskaya 5-1 down.
Sabalenka's Roland Garros which was her last tournament also met an untimely end with the Belarusian being defeated by Mirra Andreeva in the Quarter-Finals whilst unwell with a stomach bug. So certainly not having the best luck at the moment.
Sabalenka had to call the physio mid-way through the opening set due to discomfort in her shoulder and was seen wincing when she tested it out with the physio. She then walked to the net and handed Kalinskaya the win who also had the same luck when facing Marketa Vondrousova.
Vondrousova also suffered an injury, but it was one that was caused on court as she fell over awkwardly and decided to keep on playing. But for Kalinskaya who has had her own bad injury luck since reaching the final of Dubai, it is a big chance. She now faces Victoria Azarenka who has been the only player dodging the rain and the showers in Berlin. She won through yesterday before the day was cancelled and also did so with Elena Rybakina retiring early in their tie. So they will face off in the first semi-final.
Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff are deep into their first set on the other court. Jessica Pegula v Katerina Siniakova also needs to be completed with the winner coming from the tie to face Jabeur or Gauff. The semi-finals are also played today with the final being on Sunday. But for Sabalenka, she will now hope it is not serious ahead of her Wimbledon. One of her better surfaces for sure and one that has eluded her despite her prowess.
