The WTA has announced the recipients of it's year-ending awards, and Australian
Ashleigh Barty has been named as the WTA Player of the Year.
This is the second time in her career that Barty has gone home with the prestigious award, after winning it in 2019. The 25-year had an outstanding 2021 season, capturing a tour-leading five WTA singles titles. Although she won titles at Miami, Stuttgart and Cincinnati, her biggest victory came at the Wimbledon Championships, where she lifted her second Grand Slam trophy.
Despite a third round loss at the US Open and her withdrawal from Indian Wells and the WTA Finals, Barty had done enough to secure the year-end No.1 ranking for the third consecutive year.
The Queensland native has since returned home after spending over six months on the road, and is currently preparing for next year's
Australian Open, which kicks off on January 17, 2022.
