Despite an unexpected loss to Slovakia earlier in the week, Team USA righted the ship with an easy victory over Spain on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the
Billie Jean King Cup.
The 18-time champions secured their semifinal spot following victories by
Sloane Stephens and
Danielle Collins in the singles matches, with Collins breezing past
Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1 6-0 in under an hour.
“Our desire to do well is from the time we landed in Prague,” Collins said. “We want to win this and now it is a little bit closer. We are good at playing under pressure and have experience of dealing with tough situations on court. We handle those moments well.”
The Americans will face Russia in the semifinals, after
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova led her team to overcame defending champions France earlier in the day.
