Day 1, Results at Hobart International: Linette edges past Kuznetsova, Ferro through after Peterson retirement

Linette won 7-6, 7-6 as both players headed into the match having no wins to their name so far this year but it was the No.6 seed who claimed her first.

The Polish No.1 did so in two hours and six minutes off the back of a pair of contrasting tiebreaks having trailed in both sets. Despite that she is through successfully and she will next play Lauren Davis who overcame wildcard Astra Sharma in a tough match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 after saving a match point herself in the tiebreak.

Fiona Ferro advanced also when No.7 seed Rebecca Peterson had to retire due to a lower back injury at 4-4 in the opening set and there were also wins for qualifiers Kateryna Kozlova and Heather Watson.
