Former world No. 1
Caroline Wozniacki (No. 91) returns to the Round of 32 at
Wimbledon after defeating
Leylah Fernandez (No. 28) 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. In an intergenerational duel with over 12 years between them, Wozniacki saved two match points before clinching victory.
Fernandez tried to seize control early on, showcasing a more aggressive game than her rival. Both had similar serving stats, with Wozniacki winning 71% of points on her first serve, slightly edging out the Canadian's 44% on second serves.
Heart-stopping Wimbledon victory
Both players had missed opportunities to break. Fernandez came close in the 5th game, with 4 break points in her favor. Unfortunately for the former US Open runner-up, Wozniacki held strong to maintain parity.
In the 8th game, the former world No. 1 capitalized on a lone chance to gain the advantage and closed out the set 6-3 on her serve. Fernandez's 16 unforced errors proved her weakest link, while Wozniacki, less precise, totaled 11 unforced errors.
After nearly two hours of play, both were locked in a tight third set. Wozniacki initially led with a break but failed to maintain it as Fernandez leveled the match.
Wozniacki complained about poor light and requested a match suspension, though other matches proceeded normally on the other courts. Eventually, the umpire decided to halt play. Due to forecasted rain the next day, they moved the match to Centre Court after
Andy Murray's farewell. Just over an hour later, they resumed with a warm-up.
Back in the match, Fernandez was on the brink of victory at 5-4, holding two match points. However, Wozniacki overcame adversity, recovered to win her service game, and then, in a thrilling game, broke in the 11th game after squandering 5 break opportunities.
The match tilted in favor of the Dane, who seized the break at the right moment and clinched victory 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Her next opponent will be 2022 champion
Elena Rybakina (No. 4), who struggled to overcome
Laura Siegemund 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
