2021 US
Open champion
Emma Raducanu made a significant impact at her latest WTA 500
event by securing her first career victory over a top-10 player, advancing to
the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Brit, however, fell to
Daria Kasatkina
in the quarterfinals.
The Russian
claimed the title on grass on Sunday, defeating
Leylah Fernandez in the final.
Raducanu displayed a strong performance, overcoming Sloane Stephens in the
first round (6-4, 6-0) and then second seed Pegula with a 4-6, 7-6(6), 7-5
victory.
Raducanu soars to UTR Top-10
The former
world No. 10 achieved a 33-position jump in the WTA Rankings, positioning
herself as world No. 135 as of Monday. At
Wimbledon, she needs to advance a few
rounds to ensure her return to the top-100 after a year.
Injuries
seem to be a thing of the past for Raducanu, a fact supported by her position
in the UTR Ranking. Following her victory over Pegula, Emma Raducanu appears as
No. 10 in the UTR Ranking, led by Iga Swiatek and followed by Elena Rybakina
and Aryna Sabalenka.
This
ranking is considered more accurate as it ranks players based on their latest
results, using an algorithm that takes into account the difficulty of matches
faced according to the opponent's form.
Tennis
expert Laura Robson commented to Tennis365 on Raducanu's good form as she
prepares to compete at Wimbledon: “It’s great to see Emma looking excited to be
back on court and up for the challenge,” Robson said. “Now I’m expecting her to
have a good Wimbledon. She’s put the work in, been practising on grass for
quite a few weeks now, and she is looking ready for it.
“Looking at
her levels, she is clearly playing well above her ranking. She is already right
up there with top players and that will be really nice for Emma to see,” she
added. “She will know she is not far off and is in a lot better place than she
was six months ago. So if I had to pick out a player to watch at Wimbledon in
the women’s draw, it would be Emma.”
