Emma Raducanu sailed through her Miami Open first-round match against wildcard Sayaka Ishii, winning 6-2, 6-1 to secure her spot in the second round. The former US Open champion took just over an hour to comfortably claim victory in her opening match.

Ishii (No. 188) received a wildcard to make her debut in a WTA 1000 event. The Japanese player’s inexperience at this level seemed to affect her, as she struggled to find her rhythm and had little success with her serve.

First Set

Raducanu (No. 60) started strong, breaking early after creating a couple of break-point chances. The former world No. 10 showed some nerves, dropping her serve to love in the next game and allowing Ishii to level the match.

From there, Raducanu took full control, winning 16 of the next 21 points without facing any issues on her own serve. She landed 70% of her first serves, winning 64% of those points. Ishii, despite hitting 83% of her first serves, managed to win only 40% of them. Raducanu closed out the set with four consecutive games to take it 6-2.

Second Set

The world No. 60 maintained her momentum in the second set, serving even more impressively with a 75% first-serve percentage, winning 93% of those points. Raducanu extended her streak to nine consecutive games, breaking Ishii twice and holding serve to race to a 5-0 lead.

Ishii managed to hold serve for the first and only time in the set to make it 5-1, but Raducanu showed no hesitation when serving for the match, sealing the win 6-2, 6-1.

Next, Raducanu will face American 8th seed Emma Navarro, in what will be their first career meeting.
