In a
Roland Garros (French Open) that has been full of surprises and milestones,
Beatriz Haddad Maia set another one that made her entire nation proud.
The Brazilian rallied from a set down to record a 6-7(3) 6-3 7-5 over Sara Sorribes Tormo to reach the quarterfinal on Monday. By virtue of this victory, she became the first Brazilian woman to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal in 55 years.
Seeded 14th at the event, Haddad Maia has been incredibly consistent and with her latest performance could be considered a dark horse to make it to the final. Awaiting her in the final 8 is seventh seed Ons Jabeur, who is slowly beginning to rediscover the form that saw her reach two Grand Slam finals last year.
