Leylah Fernandez broke out in a major way during the 2021 US Open where she reached the final before losing out to Emma Raducanu.
The Canadian tennis player wowed many with her aggressive and brave play, especially in crucial rallies. She outperformed many seasoned veterans who have won majors before in clutch situations showcasing herself as a proper big match player. Ultimately she lost to a player who was on an even more brilliant run in Raducanu.
Speaking to EFE News Agency ahead of the 2022 season Fernandez admitted she is still not over the defeat:
“I still can‘t accept that defeat, but I learned what I can teach the world and that I can play against the greats."
She also tocuhed upon her work in the offseason saying:
"I have to improve my whole game. Improve my forehand, my serve, my volley, all by two or three per cent to be among the 10 in the ranking, among the five, and one day at number one and win a Grand Slam."
Fernandez will start her 2022 season at the Adelaide International which takes place during the first week of January.
