Bianca
Andreescu expressed her desire to finish the year in the top-10 and her
dissatisfaction with her current ranking.
The
Canadian tennis player had an incredible breakthrough on the WTA tour at just
19 years old. In her first season as a professional in 2019, she started the
year as the world No. 107 and ended it as the world No. 5, winning the US Open
and the WTA 1000 titles in Toronto and Indian Wells.
Andreescu
was hailed as the future of women's tennis, but after the pandemic-induced
hiatus when there were no tournaments, she couldn't replicate her previous
results and has hovered around the world No. 40 ranking for the past two years
(currently 44th).
In a recent
interview, Andreescu admitted that she doesn't like seeing her current ranking
because she believes she is capable of being much higher. Her goal is to reach
at least the top-20 by the end of the year, although she hopes to perform even
better and break into the top-10.
.“I don’t
like to see that number next to my name and I know I can be better than that.
My goal by the end of the year is to be top 20, hopefully top 10. That’s the
ranking I should have. I work hard & it will pay off,” former world No. 4
said.
Her latest
appearance on the WTA tour was this week at the Mubadala Citi Open, where she
suffered a first-round defeat against Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk. Andreescu
had an advantage in the first set, but Kostyuk managed to force the match into
a final tie-break, securing the victory and advancing in the Washington DC
Open.
Starting
from Monday,
Bianca Andreescu will compete in the
Canadian Open, a title she
already won in 2019 and where she defends points from reaching the third round
last year, when she was defeated by Zheng Qinwen.
She received a
wildcard entry from the organization and will make her debut against a likely
qualifier. If she overcomes the challenge, the 7th seed Petra Kvitova awaits
her in the second round
