America’s
Emma Navarro has made an honest confession after
winning the Merida Open. The 23-year-old secured the WTA 500 title after
beating Emiliana Arango in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Talking after the match, Navarro made an honest confession
that she never imagined winning a WTA 500 event in her career. "I think
I've never been that good at looking ahead, so I never imagined myself playing
in a WTA 500 final at the beginning," she said. "I don't think I ever
imagined myself winning in the 500 category."
Navarro also expressed satisfaction with her own
performance in the big match. “Today I did things well but I was not better
than her," She said. "A 6-0, 6-0 is proof that there is not a single thing that needs to be
fixed; I have to improve my serve, my return, how I move and the speed of the
ball.”
Navarro, during her triumph in the Merida Open, achieved a unique
milestone. She has become the only fifth women’s player to win an ATP event
without losing a single game in the final since 2000. The other players to
achieve that were former French player Marion Bartoli, former Poland player
Agnieszka Radwańska, Romania’s Simona Halep and the former world number one
Poland’s Iga Swiatek.
Navarro had a perfect run in the competition and did
not lose a single set. In the round of 16, she defeated Croatia’s Petra Martic
with a score of 6-1, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, she got the better of Zeynep
Sonmez of Turkey in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinal,
Navarro outclassed Columbia’s Elina Avanesyan in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 6-3.
The victory was important for Navarro, who came into the competition after a rather disappointing start to the 2025 season.
Before playing in the Merida Open, the New York-born star featured in five competitions but did not cement a spot beyond the
quarterfinals.
