World No. 3 Coco Gauff had no trouble defeating World No. 173 Jodie Burrage 6-3, 7-6 to secure her place in the third round, where she will face 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (No. 29).
The American is already a seasoned player on the Tour. She began her career at just 15 years old, making a name for herself by defeating Venus Williams at Wimbledon—a tournament where Williams claimed 5 of her 7 Grand Slam titles.
Since then, Gauff has made 21 consecutive main draw appearances at Grand Slams, amassing a 62-20 record. Her career highlights include winning the 2023 US Open, finishing as runner-up at the 2022 French Open, and reaching two additional semifinals. At just 20 years old, Gauff has played 335 matches with a 236-99 (70%) record and has claimed 10 titles.
After her recent win against Burrage, Gauff was asked during her on-court interview about her upcoming 21st birthday on March 13. "I don't know. I'll be at Indian Wells. I'm not a huge party person," the 2023 US Open champion said. "I love escape rooms. I'll probably want to do an escape room."
"Maybe have a drink with my parents?" she laughed. "I mean, I was legal everywhere else except the US, so I don't think that much would change because I travel a lot."
"I know my friends want me to go and have a party in Miami and do something crazy,” Gauff added. "But I'm an athlete. My thrill is being here."
World No. 3 will return to the court on Friday night at the Margaret Court Arena for her first real test against a seeded player in the draw.
