Bianca Andreescu wanted to win badly but the Canadian stumbled against Chinese player Qinwen Zheng in three sets.
It was a well-fought match between the players but it was far from the best Andreescu had to offer and she knew it. After the match, Bianca felt very disappointed admitting that she wanted to win it for the crowd:
“I really wish I won for you guys. I can’t wait to come back, honestly. That’s all I’m thinking about right now. Two more years.”
The last time Andreescu played in Toronto was in 2019 and she won the event beating Serena Williams in the final. Much has changed since then with Williams set to retire in a few weeks and Andreescu becoming a grand slam champion. She wasn't playing her best tennis but she's getting there:
“I wouldn’t say I was on my ‘A’ game, but I gave my best with what I had today. I think I fought really hard. I think it’s getting there. But like I said before, if I continue to just give my best and stay really committed to this, because I really, really want this — especially after, you know, taking so much time off, taking time for myself and all those really tough moments. I just feel like I’m in a great place right now.”
Andreescu spent a lot of time on the courts and she is feeling it:
“I definitely need like three days off, maybe. I felt
pretty good in the morning, and then I started moving and I was like,
'Oh, gosh.' But then adrenaline kicked in during the match and all of
that kind of went away. But overall, I’m just happy with how my
body is."
