Hubert Hurkacz played his best match since the Halle Open final to down Nick Kyrgios in a very interesting match 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-1.
The match started and went largely as expected as both players possess a really strong and precise serve. Kyrgios was rushing a lot between points and the match assumed this really quick pace which was too fast by many standards. Kyrgios was not in the business of playing long rallies and Hurkacz kind of blended into that.
Both players had chances in the first set but neither converted those break points. Hurkacz got a gift at the start of the tiebreak as Kyrgios committed a double fault. The Polish player held his serve and finished off the set with 7-4 in the tiebreak. The 2nd set was fairly similar but had many break points at the start.
Nine overall but neither was able to use any. Soon after that, both settled into a nice rhythm and we saw no break points anymore. The 2nd set also went to the tiebreak with Kyrgios winning a fairly competitive one 7-5. It was shaping up to be an epic 3rd set but it was anything but. Kyrgios dropped his serve early in the 3rd and he kind of quit after that.
He rushed, even more, he played carelessly and basically did not even try that hard. That was enough for Hurkacz to get a 6-1 finish. Kyrgios dealt with back pain during the match and simply had enough of tennis playing for three consecutive weeks.
