Simona Halep once again had no issues against the young
Coco Gauff who had no solutions for the Romanian losing 4-6 6-7(2).
Gauff played a couple of tough matches this week and this was another one however it wasn't competitive as the previous two were. Halep once again demonstrated a very high level despite the match featuring a certain lack of consistency for her.
It's nothing new for Halep, she's been playing up and down for a while but the most crucial thing for her was that her pressure resulted in Gauff dropping serve often. The American served well enough but Halep was ready for it. They traded early breaks but Halep was able to break her once more to take a 4-2 lead.
At 4-3, Gauff had a break point to pull it back but she failed to use it and Halep finished it off with 6-4. The 2nd set featured some inconsistency from both as we saw plenty of breaks. Halep jumped out to a 3-0 lead breaking Gauff twice but then dropped her serve to make it 3-1. She broke Gauff once more for the 4-1 lead but dropped her serve to make it 4-2.
Halep served for the match at 5-4 but Gauff broke her to make it 5-5 and stay in the match. Halep had another chance to close it out at 6-5 serving for the match again but failed to do it again. In the tiebreak she finally closed it out 7-2.
