The world number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek has politely declined Britain’s Andy Murray’s request to play in the mixed doubles category in the US Open.
The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is currently underway in New York where players are participating in three different categories — singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
In a video posted by the US Open on their official account on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter — Murray was asked which player he would like to play in the mixed category in the mega-event and he named the current top-ranted WTA player.
Swiatek was asked about it after she secured her second-round win in the mega-event against Australia’s Daria Saville in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4 whether she would be interested in sharing the court with the former men’s world number one.
The Polish tennis star was clearly ecstatic after being named by one of the tennis greats as a potential partner to play in the mixed category but politely declined the offer by stating that she would want to focus on the singles category.
"I love that he said that,” she said. “It’s a dream come true. I watched Andy when I was younger. He always had such a good game & is such a cool person as well. Really humble and down to earth.
"So I'm happy he said that. I wish I could play mixed doubles. For me, singles is enough, especially with such an intense and long season. So I'll just focus on singles but I think Andy will forgive me.”
Swiatek is currently defending her crown at the Flash Medows as she won the title last year after beating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
The Warsaw-born is now set to face off Kaja Juvan of the Czech Republic in the third round of the mega-event on Friday.
