Polish teenager
Iga Swiatek made quick work of Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan in her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal to reach the
Roland Garros semifinal.
Swiatek displayed her power and versatility during the 78 minutes rout, as she ended Trevisan's fairytale run with a 6-3 6-1 victory. After ousting top seed Simona Halep on Sunday, the 19-year old is yet to drop a set during the entire tournament.
"I just knew that I'm not going to play as perfect as with Simona," Swiatek said after the match. "On my level, it's impossible to keep that level of consistency. I just knew that I'm going to make some mistakes at the beginning because of the conditions. I just stayed really down-to-earth and really positive."
"I wanted to be aggressive from the beginning so I can lead on court," the Pole continued. "I did that pretty well."
Having lost to Trevisan during an ITF Challenger event in 2017, Swiatek has since leveled the score with her opponent. She now leads the Italian 2-1 in career meetings. Furthermore, the World No.54 did not let the magnitude of the situation overwhelm her, as she remained focused on the task at hand.
"I wasn't thinking that I'm playing quarterfinal of a Grand Slam," said Swiatek. "I just kept doing everything I did before."
Swiatek is the second woman from Poland to reach the final four at Roland Garros, Jadwiga Jedrzejowska finished as runner-up at the 1939 event. Regardless, the Polish teenager will face qualifier Nadia Podoroska for a spot in the final. The Argentine upset third seed Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-4 to reach her maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
