Iga Swiatek stops Eva Lys' Lucky Loser journey at 2025 Australian Open

On Monday, January 20, 2025, the world number two Iga Świątek met the German Lucky Loser Eva Lys in the round of 16 of the Australian Open but it was a one sided affair in truth.
Lys, who advanced to the main draw as a "lucky loser", had previously made history with impressive performances by becoming the first female "lucky loser" to reach the round of 16 in Melbourne.
The match was a dominant performance from Świątek, who showed off her experience and class. With precise baseline shots and a varied game, she put Eva Lys under pressure right from the start. After just 28 minutes, she took the first set 6:0.
Lys won her second service game in the second set. Nevertheless, Świątek kept the upper hand at all times and also secured the second set 6:1 with a total playing time of just 58 minutes.

Albeit like Raducanu in the last round, it is very much in vain as she was well beaten by Swiatek who alongside Aryna Sabalenka can be underlined as the favourite for the title. A title that Swiatek has never claimed but could it finally be heading her way over the next week?
It would be a redemption arc after her doping issues in recent months going from a squeaky clean top star to a player with criticism and doubt.
