Iga Swiatek recently answered a hypothetical question about which player she would choose as her coach, and the world No. 2 pointed to none other than her rival, Aryna Sabalenka. Drawing inspiration from Novak Djokovic’s association with Andy Murray, the Polish star picked the 3-time Grand Slam champion as a potential coach.
Both players competed at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships this week, but neither will leave fully satisfied. Sabalenka fell in the Round of 16 against Denmark’s Clara Tauson, while Swiatek—defending her title—was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Mirra Andreeva.
During her press conference in Dubai, Swiatek was asked to choose a current player on tour as a hypothetical coach."Well, (Andrea) Petkovic is not playing anymore, but I've heard she has a good eye. I've always liked her, so I think we'd get on well," the world No. 2 responded. "Or maybe Aryna Sabalenka. She's older than me, so maybe she'll retire sooner than me. That would be fun."
Following Swiatek’s comments, Sabalenka was asked in a Q&A session for her thoughts on the 5-time Grand Slam champion’s statement. "I’m not sure about that," Sabalenka replied. "Probably because of my crazy experience I could help with the mental part of the game. But once again, I’m not sure about that."

Swiatek and Sabalenka remain locked in a battle for the world No. 1 ranking, though the Polish star still has ground to cover before reclaiming the top spot. Swiatek’s quarter-final loss in Dubai means she is mathematically unable to surpass Sabalenka in the rankings next month, even if she wins both Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
Swiatek is defending 1,120 points, compared to just 185 points for Sabalenka. Even without playing, the Belarusian is guaranteed to retain the No. 1 ranking heading into the clay swing in April.
