Colombian Camila Osorio stunned a shaky Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 to deliver the first major upset of Indian Wells. The world No. 53 displayed strong baseline play and capitalized on Osaka’s unforced errors to earn a well-deserved victory and advance to the second round.

Osaka had not lost in the first round of a WTA 1000 event since the 2022 Cincinnati Open. With this defeat, she fails to defend the third-round points from 2024 and will drop outside the top 60. Meanwhile, Osorio makes history as the first Colombian player to defeat a former world No. 1.

First Set

Despite playing her first match since late January—when she reached the Singapore Open quarterfinals—Osorio showed no signs of rust. The break from competition seemed to have worked in her favour, as she appeared in top form.

The match began with both players holding serve at a steady pace, but Osaka’s unforced errors soon crept in. Returning after nearly two months out due to injury, the four-time Grand Slam champion looked out of rhythm. Osaka saved a break point in the third game, but neither player had another chance until 4-4, when Osorio seized on her opponent’s mistakes to secure a crucial break.

Known as more of a clay-court specialist, Osorio made excellent use of her technical variety, frequently employing drop shots to disrupt Osaka’s rhythm. The 23-year-old Colombian comfortably served out the first set 6-4, dropping just five points on serve.

Second Set

Osorio struck early in the second set, breaking a frustrated Osaka, who struggled to keep her composure. The Colombian’s relentless consistency from the baseline forced Osaka into more errors as she attempted to go for riskier winners.

The former world No. 1 managed to break back but continued to struggle with her forehand against Osorio’s resilience. Three consecutive unforced errors from Osaka handed another crucial break to Osorio, giving her a 4-3 lead. The Colombian held onto the advantage, wasting one match point on Osaka’s serve before closing out the victory on her own serve - saving four break points - for a 6-4, 6-4 win.
